How it works
Most apps train one thing. Karte connects reading, writing, memory and speaking, so each word you meet is practised in several ways within days.
A news story rewritten for your level. Tap any word you don’t know.
Reply to today’s questions in a full German sentence and get it corrected.
Your new words come back as flashcards just before you would forget them.
Use them in a role-play conversation that gently fixes your mistakes.
Nachrichten · News reader
Stories from the BBC, The Guardian, The Hindu and Ars Technica, rewritten in clear, natural German several times a day. Original German newspapers are written at C1; Karte meets you where you are.
Fragen · Daily questions
Every morning, a neighbour, a colleague, your boss or a stranger on the train asks you something. You answer in a full German sentence, the way you would in person.
Üben · Spaced repetition
Grade each card Again, Hard, Good or Easy, and Karte schedules the next review just before you would forget it. A few minutes a day is enough.
Gespräch · Conversation
Role-play at the bakery, over coffee with a colleague or at the doctor’s. Your partner keeps the conversation going, uses the words you’re learning, and corrects you without breaking the flow.
Everything else you need
German or English in, a short level-matched explanation out, with article, plural or conjugation and three example sentences.
Ask “weil or denn?” or “when is it dem?” and get the rule, the exceptions that matter and everyday examples.
Fill the missing word in a real example sentence, so you learn words the way they are used.
Use a new word in a sentence of your own and get a corrected version and a more natural alternative.
Hear every word, example sentence, question and article read aloud, on desktop, Android and iPhone.
der, die and das each have their own colour, so noun genders stick without extra drilling.
A daily goal, your streak, reviews done, mature cards and a 14-day activity chart.
Optional notifications when fresh articles arrive or when it’s time for today’s practice.

CEFR levels
Pick your level once. Articles, questions, explanations, grammar answers and conversations are all written for it, and you can move up whenever you’re ready.
A1–A2
Short sentences, present and perfect tense, everyday vocabulary. News is reduced to the key facts and questions ask about simple choices.
B1–B2
Subordinate clauses, connectors like weil, obwohl and trotzdem, and opinions with reasons. Ideal for work, integration courses and exam preparation.
C1–C2
Full newspaper style, idioms and nuance. Feedback focuses on register and sounding natural rather than basic errors.

FAQ
Can’t find your answer? Try Karte — it takes a minute to set up.
Karte is a web app for learning German. It rewrites real news stories in German at your CEFR level, asks you a few everyday questions each morning, and turns the words you meet into flashcards that are scheduled with spaced repetition. Word explanations, grammar answers, sentence feedback and role-play conversations are all adapted to your level, from A1 to C2.
Yes. You can create an account and use the news reader, daily questions, flashcards, word lookup, grammar answers and conversation practice for free.
Yes, as long as the text is at the right level. Real news gives you current, useful vocabulary and a reason to keep reading, but original German articles are usually written at C1. Karte rewrites each story for your level, lets you tap any word for its meaning, and can colour each sentence by its parts, so you learn the grammar and the vocabulary from the same text.
Karte collects new articles from the BBC, The Guardian, The Hindu and Ars Technica several times a day and rewrites each one in clear German for your level. You can filter by one or more topics, listen to the article, and mark it as read.
In any news article you can turn on a view that shows each sentence as its own block and colours its parts: subject, verb, accusative object, place and time, and subordinate clauses. It makes German word order, such as the verb at the end of a subordinate clause, easy to see.
Every morning Karte prepares a few questions that people in your everyday life might ask you, for example a friend, a colleague, a neighbour or someone on the train. You answer each one with a full German sentence and get a verdict, a corrected version with your changes marked, helpful words to use, and an English translation if you need it.
Karte uses the same proven spaced repetition idea with Again, Hard, Good and Easy grades, but you don’t build cards by hand: looking up a word gives you its meaning, article, plural or conjugation, example sentences and a riddle, ready to save. When you are stuck, you open clues one at a time instead of seeing the answer. And the words come from what you read and say, not from a list.
All six CEFR levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. You choose your level in the settings, and news, questions, explanations, grammar answers and conversations follow it. You can change it at any time.
Yes. In Gespräch you role-play everyday situations such as the bakery, a coffee with a colleague or asking for directions. Your partner replies in German, works in the words you are learning, reads replies aloud if you like, and corrects your mistakes with a short explanation.
No. Karte runs in any modern browser on desktop, Android and iPhone. You can add it to your home screen to open it like an app and to receive practice reminders.
Choose your level, read one story, answer one question. That’s day one.
